What do you think of when you hear Black Girl Magic? Or for that matter, what do you think of when you hear Unicorn? I actually envision a wand with magic sprinkles that can make anything possible. I came across an article in Huffington Post with the definition of Black Girl Magic being " a term used to illustrate the universal awesomeness of black women. A celebration of anything we deem particularly dope, inspiring and mind blowing about ourselves." Yes, Amen, I agree wholeheartedly, Black Girl Magic is all of that.
I then looked up the definition of Unicorn. Unicorns by no means are new and happen to be the most common thing most of us know of but have never seen. Their popularity comes and goes depending on your age, but this time around the magic of unicorns feels less fantasy and more substantial. Maybe it's because Starbucks introduced a frappe chino in its honor and many of us find ourselves mesmerized by the glitter, sparkle and bright colors associated with magic of this white horse with a golden horn.
Anyway, getting back to the definition, after seeing many standard definitions, I became intrigued by the Urban Dictionary's version. It says the a unicorn " is that girl you can't catch. Everything about her is perfect, divine if you will. Getting with her is unfathomable. She is a blessing from God. Bumping into her on the sidewalk is a good day, holding a conversation with her means you were probably dreaming. She is good luck. It takes time, effort and persistency, but never give up. Under no circumstances should you ever marry a girl who is not your unicorn." Amen to this too!
Then I started thinking....Black Girl Magic, Unicorn, Black Girl Magic, Unicorn...🤔 Black Girl Magic, Unicorn... Magical Unicorn?
That's it! We are Magical Unicorns! Why not, aren't we deserving of that description? Wasn't it Jesse Williams who so eloquently said in his beautiful Black Lives Matter speech, 'just because we're magic doesn't mean we're not real?'
Reading both definitions make me feel inspired and proud to be a black woman, but the definition of a unicorn by a black man spoke to me more on so many levels. As Magical Unicorns, we must know that we are perfection, our girls must know that they are perfection. We are blessings from God and as such, we do bring good luck. It is understood that to get all the magical blessings of goodness from us magical unicorns takes time and effort. It is also understood to accept less than a unicorn for your partner is settling which we would not have for our Kings. I love this so much because I think it's important that our girls starting very early understand that this is how they should be looked upon. Our girls should know that they wear a crown, whether it's seen by others or not.
So many of our girls have been looked down on and have been given low expectations when this simply is not true, Magical Unicorns can be anything they put their minds to. Magical Unicorns thrive and not just survive. I know that not everyone is living in the same set of circumstances, but that has nothing to do with the feeling you have about yourself. If you believe it, if you know that you are deserving then what would ever stop you from achieving all your hopes and dreams?
Black Girl you are a Magical Unicorn, capable and deserving of success, love and every dream your heart desires. In the end, I believe without a doubt, magical unicorns have a magic wand full of magic sprinkles that make everything possible.
You were wonderful since the day you were born because you are a unicorn.🦄
